Gardening for REAL

It's that time of year, and I'm already thinking about seeds. I treat my seed catalogue like the best little magazine you'll ever find on the rack.
The whole process of gardening is a labour of love. From purchasing the seeds to preparation of the soil, to nurturing tiny shoots and grappling with beatles, slugs, or pesky rodents, does not deter the heart of a gardener as we triumphantly emerge with our bouquet of salad greens or bowl of fresh strawberries.
Similarily, I've watched our Chef prepare a soup or gravy with the care and attention that only a gardener would comprehend. He hoards vegetable skins and tops as though they were precious jewels. When it's time to put it all together, there's a flurry of activity and the creation is coddled, tasted and reviewed for approval. Making things from scratch does remind me of gardening. It's that same loving process, not to be hurried or rushed, or treated like a drive through window. The end result is the same. It's REAL, and it does taste different.

A COLD, SO COLD

A cold so cold that breath hangs like crystals in the air. A cold so cold that snow underfoot, crunches like broken bones.

Outfitted with oversized snow suits, balaclavas, mittens to our elbows and snowboots that don’t bend, we  embrace the northern outdoors in early morning. The east has been painted by a fairy with angelic brushes of pastel blues and pinks. The day promises to be bright, but cold.  A cold so cold that thoughts freeze in the air.

We make our way around the island looking for changes. The ice in one spot has broken in its pregnancy, forming a crack like jagged lightning bolts. Over there, it has forced water up and our malamute hurries to get out of the freezing crystals. He stops on the other side and vigorously bites, ridding his furry pads of ice balls.

The granite boulders of our shoreline have dollops of white, as fluffy and pristine as snow-capped mountains. We round the corner of the island, and a gust of northerly wind announces itself. A cold, so cold I fight back tears.  We change directions to hide from the wind breathing clouds in the morning air. We can see the smoke from our chimney curling drifts in the sky.

Valentine's Day - TWO MENUS TO CHOOSE FROM

Two Nights - Two Great Selections - One Great Price -

Our February 14th dinner on Sunday is loaded with your favorites, however, on Saturday evening, for the adventurous, we are bringing to  you one of our favorite Themes - Mardi Gras, which happens to  fall on the week of Valentine's.  Louisiana is home to some of the finest cooking in the world.  Recipes have been passed down from generation to generation.  Food is respected and prepared just the way our Chef likes it - slow and thoughtful with lots of preparation.  The spirit of Mardi Gras reigns this evening at the Woodpile - an abundance of great authentic food and drink in a festive atmosphere.

Our dinner starts with Seafood Gumbo - a rich combination of seafood, fish, sausage and okra in a divine blend of spices.
The entree is loaded with variety - Crab Cakes - patties of delicious homemade crabmeat stuffing; Chicken Creole - a traditional chicken dish with zesty tomato sauce piquant; Cajun Shrimp - a winner of Cajun delight; Louisiana Squash - a classic Cajun style dish.

And if you are still hungry, we are serving Brandied Bread Pudding for Dessert!
Reservations a must!
______________________________________________________________________________________
Sunday, February 14th - Our starter is our deliciously home blended French Onion Soup.  The entree is a 7 oz. slice of AAA Prime Rib that is simply mouth watering, your choice of potato and fresh sauteed vegetable.  We know you will have a little room left for the Maestro's famous Chocolate Mousse.  This meal is brimming with flavour.  You will simply need to take your time to make it through all the different tastes.  Sit back, relax, and be with your Valentine!

Reservations a must!
